Learn How to Code Your Own Website

This course will prepare young women and girls from diverse social backgrounds with programming skills to start their businesses and careers as web developers, web designers, and front-end programmers. Our introductory HTML & CSS+ web design program will provide girls with basic coding skills and the ability to build a website.

Program Overview

Section 1: Introduction to HTML: Build the Skeleton of Your Website

Every web programmer will need to understand HTML language because it is what constitute the structure and the content of your website. This unit includes understanding what is HTML, choosing a code editor, basic building blocks of HTML, getting started with HTML and best code practices.

Section 2: Introduction to CSS: Make Your Website Extra Pretty

CSS is used to style your website by playing with colour, font, and even simple animations! This unit includes understanding different types of CSS, how to use it, how it saves us time, different CSS selectors, IDs, Classes in CSS and CSS comments.

Section 3: Design and Branding Fundamentals: Show Off to the World

You shouldn’t keep your beautiful website to yourself. We will share fundamental design principles for you to create visual assets for your website. We will then share the tips to promote your website to your friends, family and everyone in the world!

Program Outline

  • March 12  – Introduction to HTML: what is HTML, HTML tags, and page construction
  • March 19 – HTML: What are attributes (part 1), insert images, make navigation menu
  • March 26  – HTML: What are attributes (part 2), finalize HTML pages, referencing CSSstylesheet​
  • April 2 - CSS: Cascading, inheritance and specificity, and advanced selector
  • April 9 - CSS: Inline, block, and inline-block, floating elements, and all background images
  • April 16 - CSS: Responsive design, media queries, percentage
  • April 23 - Domain Registration: register domain name, website hosting, 
  • April 30 - CSS Bonus: Animation, key frame, and transition
  • May 7 - Program Virtual Finale
